Back in 2010, Matt and Danielle Davis had been married only seven months when Matt was seriously injured in a motorcycle ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛ, leaving him on life support and in a coma.
The crash left him with a severe traumatic brain injury and he was placed on life support. His young bride was given the devastating news that there was a 90 percent chance he would never wake up from the coma.
Doctors recommended she remove her young husband from live support.
“They said that if it was them, they would pull the plug. That’s what they’d want their family to do,” Danielle Davis told WTOC.
But she refused.
“I knew that God could get us through that. I didn’t think that it was too big for God,” she said.
When the hospital sent Matt home, Danielle took care of her husband.
“Feeding tube, adult ‘briefs,’ sponge baths, over 20 medications, physical therapy, turning him every 2 hrs to prevent bed sores, etc.,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page.
He remained in a coma for three months.
Then one day, he spoke.
“He said ‘I’m trying,’” Danielle Davis told the Georgia television station.
She recalled on the GoFundMe page that it was the “greatest thing” she had ever heard.
But when he woke up, Matt couldn’t remember the past three years, including his marriage and the ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ of his father.
“I didn’t know my dad was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. I didn’t know I was married. I didn’t know anything,” he said to the TV station.
But in the time that has passed since the ᴄʀᴀsʜ, Danielle Davis said her husband has made incredible progress and is no longer on medications today.
Matt Davis has been in a rehabilitation program and has made “drastic” progress in learning to walk again, Danielle Davis wrote on the GoFundMe page.
He has struggled to regain his long-term memory and is unable to remember Danielle from before the ᴄʀᴀsʜ.
He may not remember dating or marrying his wife, but as Matt Davis said in a recent interview with ABC News, “I’m sure glad I married her.”
Danielle Davis said she set up the GoFundMe to help cover costs as he continues his rehabilitation so her husband can reach “his full potential.”
