The Million-Dollar Ringtone

A ringing phone left unattended on a crowded country club counter is a dangerous thing, but nobody expected it to spark a massive, high-end spending spree.

A gentleman relaxing at the bar watched a smartphone buzz relentlessly. Seeing no one around to claim it, he finally picked it up, swiped to answer, and put it to his ear with a grin.

“Hello?” he said.

“Honey, it’s me!” a woman’s voice chirped excitedly on the other end. “Are you still at the club?”

“Yes,” the man replied smoothly.

“Wonderful! I’m at the mall just two blocks away from you, and I just spotted the most exquisite mink coat. It is absolutely to die for! Can I please buy it?”

The man didn’t hesitate. “How much is it?”

“It’s on sale for only $1,500!”

“Well, go ahead and get it then, if you love it that much,” he replied calmly.

“Oh, thank you, sweetheart!” she squealed. “And since you’re in such a generous mood… I just stopped by the dealership and saw the new Mercedes models. There’s a gorgeous one on the showroom floor, and the salesman gave me an incredible deal. Plus, we really need to trade in that BMW we got last year anyway…”

The man leaned back against the bar. “What price did he quote you?”

“Only $60,000,” she said breathlessly.

“Alright,” he agreed. “But for that price, make sure they throw in every single luxury option.”

“Ahhh, you’re the absolute best! But wait, before we hang up, there’s just one more little thing…”

“What’s that?”

“It might sound like a lot, but I was looking over your bank accounts, and then I ran into the real estate agent this morning. The luxury beachfront estate we looked at last summer is officially on sale! You remember, right? The one with the English garden, the massive swimming pool, and an acre of private park area?”

The man took a slow sip of his drink. “And how much are they asking?”

“Only $450,000! It’s a magnificent price, and I can see we have plenty of cash in the bank to cover it…”

“Well, why not?” the man replied with a shrug. “Go ahead and buy it. But just bid $420,000 first to see if they bite. Okay?”

“Oh my goodness, thank you! I’ll see you later tonight! I love you!!!”

“Bye… love you too.”

The man hung up the phone, tapped the screen to lock it, and raised his hand high in the air for the entire lounge to see.

“Hey, fellas!” he shouted across the crowded room. “Does anyone know who this phone belongs to?”
